Maureen Dowd has been an important voice for the New York Times and in American political discourse for decades. Before winning a Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary for her writing on the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1999, she started her career in journalism in the 1970s at the Washington Star, where she held various titles, such as sports reporter, metropolitan reporter, and feature writer. In 1983 she joined the staff of the New York Times as a feature writer and reporter; in 1986 she became part of the Times’s Washington staff, reporting on politics. In 1995 she became an op-ed writer for the Times. In her storied career, she has covered seven presidential elections, had additional work published in a spate of notable outlets, and published a number of books on governmental and sexual politics. Her first book, Bushworld (2004), which dissected the first term of President George W. Bush, was a bestseller, as was her next book, 2005’s Are Men Necessary? When Sexes Collide. Dowd’s latest project, Year of Voting Dangerously: The Derangement of American Politics, collects her columns on the 2016 presidential election. The new paperback edition has been updated to include Dowd's columns after the election as well. The New York Times noted that "Dowd was born to write about this race. And she dissects its main characters with poison in her pen and poetic punch in her delivery."
