Leslie Gilbert-Lurie

Leslie Gilbert-Lurie is a human rights lawyer, philanthropist, and writer. She has worked for the betterment of children in the Los Angeles area and around the world. She is the cochair of the Human Rights Watch’s Los Angeles Committee. She also is a founding board member, past president, and cochair elect of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, and a board member of the Skirball Cultural Center. She served for fourteen years on the Los Angeles County Board of Education, with three terms as president. Gilbert-Lurie has also worked at the law firm of Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg, and Tunney and was a law clerk in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She also worked for many years as a producer, executive, and writer at NBC. She is the author of the gripping memoir, Bending toward the Sun: A Mother Daughter Memoir (2009), written with her mother, Ruth Lurie. The memoir recounts Ruth Lurie’s experience during the German invasion of Poland when she was a child, and the history of their family.
