Alan Light dedicated his career to writing about music and has become a leading voice in contemporary music criticism. He has written and edited for some of the biggest music publications, including Rolling Stone, Spin (where he was editor-in-chief), and Vibe (where he was both the founder and editor-in-chief). He has also contributed to music journalism in longform and is the author of a five nonfiction works about some of the most influential musicians of the last fifty years. He is the author of The Skills to Pay the Bills: The Story of the Beastie Boys (2005); The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of “Hallelujah” (2012); Let's Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain (2014); What Happened, Miss Simone? (2016), and he cowrote My Cross to Bear with Gregg Allman.
